Did you read Natalia’s blog post celebrating one year of Level Up Louisville? A lot can happen in a year! As Level Up enters year two and expands to more cities, we want to invite you to “level up” with us. What new heights can you reach in a year?

By the time the warm summer months hit, the New Year’s resolutions we made back in the winter have been forgotten. That’s why July is the perfect month to relaunch your plan to reach your goals. Every month on the blog, we’ll be giving advice and sharing resources to inspire and encourage you.

So, let’s take that next step together. Use the hashtag #levelupyear to share your progress or vent about your challenges. We’re all in this together!

In this post, we’re going to share some tips for prepping for the year ahead. Getting what you want is always easier when you have a plan in place. A good plan breaks the task ahead into smaller, more manageable tasks and gives you a way to track your progress. Follow the four steps below to create your perfect plan. Then, share your plan with us on Instagram – Don’t forget to use the hashtag #levelupyear!

Step 1: Choose Your Goal

Ask yourself, where do you see yourself a year from now? Dream big, but be realistic. You want to choose a goal you’re excited to pursue, not one you feel like is hanging over you because every spare minute must go toward achieving it. Take stock of your responsibilities and settle on a goal that challenges you, but is also do able.

Example: Let’s say you want to open up an Etsy shop selling handmade jewelry.

Step 2: Create Your Timeline

June 2017 – That’s your deadline. To hit that deadline, what do you need to accomplish each month? Each week? Mark your mini-deadlines down. I use a physical planner and a wall calendar to keep track of my deadlines, so that they’re always somewhere where I can see them. Hitting your milestones will motivate you to keep pushing forward.

Example: For your Etsy shop, your July goal might be take jewelry making classes and research other Etsy shops that sell jewelry. In August, you might create a schedule of the different styles of jewelry you want to master. September might be the month you spend sharing your jewelry with friends and family to get their feedback. and so on until you reach next June and are making money each month on your craft from your new Etsy store.

Step 3: Do Your Research

To make sure your timeline is practical, you can research your goal. There are tons of great resources on the Internet and you can also reach out to people who are already doing what you want to do for their insights. But be careful not to fall into a research blackhole, where all you do is research and never actually do. There will always be things you learn until you get started.

Example: Etsy often does interviews with their makers and there are people who blog about their Etsy experience. You might already know people who are on Etsy, invite them out for a cup of tea to talk about the process.

Step 4: Build Your Knowledge

Okay, you’ve done your research, but now you need to learn the hands-on part of your goal. This could mean taking a class – We might be able to help you with that – or reading a book or even binging Youtube videos. Rely on the experts to guide you until you are an expert.

Example: Jordan with (Thistle and Thread Design and Made Market) who teaches our Modern Embroidery class, also teaches an Etsy masterclass. Not only is this a great way to learn from an expert, you’ll also meet other people with the same goal as you. Nothing like building a community to keep you going.

Okay, now that you’ve got your plan in place, the step is to begin implementing it. Check back in July for advice on how to keep your plan moving forward.
